PEORIA – State Senator Dave Koehler announced nearly $2 million in state grant funding to support Bloomington's downtown revitalization project, "Downtown for Everyone."

"A thriving downtown is essential to every city," said Koehler (D-Peoria). "Investing in downtown Bloomington will support local businesses, enhance public spaces and improve the quality of our city for residents and visitors."

The funding, totaling $1,999,603, will support the initial development of Bloomington's "Downtown for Everyone" Streetscape Program. The project includes roadway improvements and infrastructure strengthening to recapture the image of the downtown area, making the district more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors.

This investment comes from the Rebuild Illinois Downtowns and Main Streets Capital Program, which provides awards to support public infrastructure projects designed to boost economic activity and improve the quality of life in communities across Illinois.

"This funding will help Bloomington's historic downtown live up to its full potential," Koehler said. "I’m excited to see this investment turn into real benefits for our local businesses, families and community."

PEORIA – State Senator Dave Koehler secured nearly $30,000 to support school library resources across nine school districts in the greater Bloomington-Normal and Peoria areas.

"School libraries are a critical part of a child's learning experience," said Koehler (D-Peoria). "This funding ensures that students – no matter their ZIP code – have access to the books, technology and materials they need to learn, grow and thrive."

Through the Secretary of State's School District Library Grant Program, more than $1.3 million was awarded to 2,484 public school libraries across Illinois. The funding helps libraries purchase books, e-books, audiobooks, periodicals, multilingual materials, and technology.

The following districts in the 46th Senate District received a combined total of nearly $30,000:

• Limestone Central High School District 310 (Bartonville) – $850
• Bloomington School District 87 – $3,828
• East Peoria High School District 309 – $850
• East Peoria School District 86 – $1,173
• Illinois State University Laboratory School District (Normal) – $955
• McLean County Unit School District 5 (Normal) – $10,165
• Peoria Public School District 150 – $10,207
• Pleasant Valley School District 62 (Peoria) – $850
• Washington District 50 Schools – $850

PEORIA – State Senator Dave Koehler helped secure nearly $1.2 million from the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, strengthening job-training programs in the Peoria region.

“Investing in career training programs helps residents build better lives for themselves and their families,” said Koehler (D-Peoria). “This funding will create meaningful pathways into stable, good-paying careers for people right here in our communities.”

The grants were awarded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to expand career opportunities in construction trades, with a focus on historically underrepresented populations.

Programs receiving funding in Senator Koehler’s district include:

• IL Foundation of SkillsUSA (North Central) – $550,000
• Girls Light Our Way (GLOW) – $325,000
• Next Level Academies Ministry – $325,000

“These programs are making real differences in people’s lives by offering accessible, tuition-free training and certifications in high-demand fields,” Koehler said. “By investing in our community, we’re not only supporting individuals—we’re building a stronger workforce for the future.”

SPRINGFIELD— Legislation sponsored by State Senator Dave Koehler to support student leaders serving on state higher education boards passed the Senate.

"Our student board members represent thousands of their peers and help shape decisions that directly affect colleges and universities across Illinois," said Koehler. "Offering this scholarship recognizes their dedication and encourages more students to participate in leadership roles."

Senate Bill 1475 would provide a $500 scholarship each semester to student members serving on the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Illinois Community College Board. Currently, these student members volunteer their time without compensation, only receiving reimbursement for travel-related expenses.

Under current Illinois law, student members serving on state boards receive no direct compensation. Koehler's legislation seeks to acknowledge these students' significant contributions by providing modest financial support.

"Students deserve recognition for their time, energy and commitment," said Koehler. "This legislation sends a clear message that Illinois values their leadership."

Senate Bill 1475 now advances to the Illinois House for further consideration.
